Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about TBC.

A father cradling his newborn at Transitions Birth Center

What is a birth center?

A freestanding birth center is a homelike facility that provides care for low-risk pregnancies and births outside of a hospital. Birth centers are staffed by licensed midwives and are designed to support physiological, low-intervention birth while maintaining the ability to transfer to a hospital if needed.

How much does it cost?

The Transitions Birth Center facility fee is $4,229 all-inclusive. This covers your birth suite, hydrotherapy, emergency equipment, postpartum care, and facility staffing. Midwifery fees are billed separately by your provider. See full pricing details →

How do I enroll?

You can complete your Transitions Birth Center Facility Fee Agreement online. It takes about 10 minutes. Begin enrollment here →

Who provides my midwifery care?

TBC is a facility — we do not employ midwives. You choose your own midwife. Red Moon Midwifery (Victoria Gordon, CNM) is our primary credentialed provider. Other licensed midwives may apply for facility privileges. Your midwife provides all clinical care before, during, and after your birth.

Do you take insurance?

TBC does not bill insurance directly. A superbill is available upon request for self-submission to your insurance company. Any reimbursement is your property. Professional midwifery fees are billed separately by your provider — contact them directly regarding insurance.

Can I tour the facility?

Yes. Contact us at victoria@transitionsjax.com to schedule a tour.

Am I a candidate for birth center birth?

Birth center birth is appropriate for people with low-risk pregnancies. Your midwife will assess your candidacy throughout your prenatal care. Common reasons people are not candidates include high blood pressure, certain pregnancy complications, or a history of cesarean birth (depending on circumstances). Your midwife is your best resource for determining candidacy.

What if I need to transfer to the hospital?

St. Vincent Southside is directly across the street from Transitions Birth Center. HCA Memorial is also nearby — our midwife holds privileges there and can continue your care even after a transfer. In the rare event a transfer is needed, your midwife initiates the process immediately. We have no formal transfer agreement with either hospital, but we maintain strong working relationships with both.

Can I have a water birth?

Yes. Every suite has a large birthing tub. You may labor in the water, push in the water, and birth in the water — or not. The choice is yours.

Who can be present at my birth?

You decide. Your partner, doula, family members, and support people are all welcome. We have comfortable space in each suite for your team.

What is the role of the birth assistants?

Every birth at Transitions Birth Center is supported by a credentialed midwife and one or more birth assistants. Birth assistants are trained clinical support staff who are credentialed at our facility. They support the midwife and family throughout labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

What pain management options are available?

Hydrotherapy (water immersion) is one of our most effective tools — and it's available in every suite. Other options include positioning, movement, heat, counter-pressure, and the support of your birth team and midwife. Birth centers do not offer epidurals. If you decide during labor that you want an epidural, we will facilitate transfer to the nearest appropriate hospital.

When do I come to TBC during labor?

Your midwife will guide you on timing. Generally, you will come to TBC when you are in active labor. Your midwife is your first call — they will tell you when to head in.

What happens after the birth?

You stay in your suite for postpartum observation — typically 4–6 hours after birth. Your midwife monitors you and your baby during that time. When both of you are stable and ready, you go home. Your midwife will follow up with home visits or office visits in the days after birth.

Is TBC licensed?

Yes. Transitions Birth Center is a licensed freestanding birth center in the state of Florida.
